Service Decisions · Frisco & DFW
An honest comparison for Range Rover, Defender and Discovery owners in North Texas: what the law allows an independent shop to do, which work only an authorized retailer can do free of charge, and how to decide job by job.
Authorized retailer
Independent shop
The short answer
You can legally have routine maintenance done at an independent shop without voiding your Land Rover warranty, provided it is done on schedule with the correct parts and fluids and you keep records. The benefits of an authorized Land Rover retailer are specific: warranty repairs and recall remedies are performed there at no charge, prepaid maintenance plans are redeemed there, technicians are Land Rover-trained and work on JLR’s own diagnostic and software platform every day, and Genuine Parts are standard. For a vehicle under warranty, with open recalls, or with an electrical or chassis fault, those benefits are hard to replace. In north DFW, Land Rover Frisco is the authorized retailer for owners in Frisco, Plano, McKinney and Prosper.

Owners are sometimes told, or assume, that any service outside the dealership voids the warranty. It doesn’t. The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission, makes it illegal for a manufacturer or dealer to void a warranty or deny coverage simply because someone else did the maintenance or repair. You can have the work done by an independent mechanic, a chain shop, or yourself.
The one important exception runs the other way. Repairs the manufacturer pays for under warranty, and recall remedies, are carried out through its authorized retailers. An independent shop can maintain your Land Rover, but it cannot perform a free warranty repair or a factory recall on it.
A 2020-or-later Land Rover is a networked vehicle. The Defender, the 5th-generation Range Rover and the 3rd-generation Range Rover Sport run on an electrical architecture where many faults are found, and many fixes applied, through software rather than a wrench. JLR’s diagnostic platform for these vehicles needs an online connection to its service systems. That is routine at an authorized retailer. Independents can buy access by subscription, and the best-equipped specialists do.
The 2026 recalls show why this matters in practice. The DC-DC converter campaigns, 26V248 and its September expansion 26V599, affect mild-hybrid models across most of the 2019–2024 lineup. The proposed remedy for the expansion is a software update. The driver-airbag clockspring campaign, 26V389, covers 2020–2026 Defenders, 2021–2026 Discovery models and 2022–2026 Range Rovers. Each is performed free at a retailer, and a retailer visit for any reason will flag open campaigns on your VIN. The current list and booking steps are on our schedule certified Land Rover service in Frisco page.
Many owners use both over the life of a vehicle. The useful question is not “which is better” but “which is better for this job.”
Authorized retailer is the clear choice
When the retailer earns its place
An independent can be reasonable
When a specialist may suit you
Dallas–Fort Worth also has independent shops that specialize in Land Rover and Range Rover. Quality and equipment vary widely between them. The questions further down this page, under “Questions to ask any shop,” are a practical way to vet one before handing over the keys, particularly for a vehicle from 2020 or later.
Wherever the work is done, the service standard stays the same. Oil should meet the JLR approval for your engine, as explained in our Range Rover oil change and fluid guide. Brake fluid should be renewed every two years, and brake wear sensors replaced with the pads. The full schedule is in the Land Rover maintenance schedule and cost guide.
Independent shops often charge a lower hourly rate, and for straightforward out-of-warranty jobs that saving is real. A fair comparison looks at the whole job, not the labor rate alone.
Work that should cost nothing
A fault inside the 4-year / 50,000-mile warranty that is paid for at an independent shop is money spent on a repair a retailer would have done at no charge. Rule out warranty first.
Diagnosis time
On a networked vehicle, the hours spent finding a fault can exceed the hours spent fixing it. The right tools and familiarity with the model shorten the diagnosis.
Parts like for like
Compare Genuine with Genuine. An aftermarket part can be cheaper and perfectly suitable, or it can be the reason for a repeat visit. Know which you are buying.
Service history also has a value you only see at sale time. A buyer or appraiser reading a Land Rover’s records looks for on-time service with the correct specifications. A complete, consistent history, from a retailer or a well-documented specialist, supports the price you ask. Current menu pricing for common services is on the Land Rover Frisco service specials page.
Land Rover-trained technicians, Genuine Parts, and warranty and recall work at no charge, with open recalls checked on your VIN at every visit.
Book your appointment → See service specialsFor warranty repairs, recall remedies, prepaid plan services and electrical or software faults, an authorized Land Rover retailer is the better choice, because that work is done there at no charge or requires JLR’s own systems. For out-of-warranty routine maintenance, a well-equipped independent specialist can be a reasonable alternative.
No. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal to void a warranty just because an independent shop did the maintenance. Keep records showing the work was done on schedule with the correct parts and fluids. A failure caused by incorrect work is not covered, wherever the work was done.
No. Factory recall remedies are performed free of charge by authorized Land Rover retailers. An independent shop can check your VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup, but the remedy itself has to be done at a retailer.
Some do. JLR makes its diagnostic and programming platform available to independents by paid subscription, and current models need an online connection to it. Ask any shop whether it has this access for your model year before booking electrical or software-related work.
Land Rover Prepaid Maintenance Plans are honored at participating Land Rover retailers nationwide, including for services performed in Frisco. They are not redeemable at independent shops.
