The short answer

Current petrol Land Rover models are serviced every two years or 21,000 miles (i4 and i6 engines) or every year or 16,000 miles (V8 engines), whichever comes first, with the in-car Flexible Service indicator able to call for service sooner. What maintenance costs depends mostly on which of those two interval families your engine is in, how quickly you wear brakes and tires, and whether you prepay. A Land Rover Prepaid Maintenance Plan locks in scheduled services at today’s prices.

The two service interval families

The single biggest driver of maintenance frequency, and therefore cost, is the engine under the hood.

Flexible Service means the ceiling is a maximum, not a promise. The vehicle tracks oil condition and use, and brings the service date forward when the engine works harder than average. Towing, very short trips, extended idling and sustained heat all shorten the interval. A Defender towing a boat to Lake Lavon every summer weekend will usually see its service message earlier than an identical Defender used only for highway commuting.

What a scheduled service renews and inspects

Land Rover’s scheduled maintenance is built from a consistent set of renewals and inspections. Which renewals fall on a given visit depends on time and mileage since each item was last done.

Renewed on schedule

Replaced parts and fluids

  • Engine oil and filter, using oil to the engine’s JLR approval code
  • Pollen (cabin) filter, plus the exterior cabin air filter on 5th-generation Range Rover and 3rd-generation Range Rover Sport
  • Brake fluid, every two years
  • Air cleaner element, at the interval set for the engine
  • Transmission oil, on applicable models at the longer intervals

Checked every visit

Inspections and top-offs

  • Brake, coolant and washer fluid levels, topped off
  • Battery condition
  • Brake pads for wear, calipers for leaks, rotor condition
  • Tire pressure, condition and tread depth
  • Fluid leaks underneath the vehicle

Oil deserves its own explanation. Land Rover specifies oil by a JLR approval code rather than viscosity alone, and the code differs between engine families. Our Range Rover oil change intervals and fluid guide covers oil specifications, capacities and what a Defender’s oil life monitor is measuring.

What actually drives Land Rover maintenance cost

Rather than quote a generic dollar figure that won’t match your vehicle, here are the six factors that move the number, in rough order of impact.

1

Engine family

A V8 on a one-year cycle has roughly twice as many oil services over four years as an i6 on a two-year cycle.

2

Brake wear

Pads, rotors and wear sensors are the largest wear-item cost. Stop-and-go traffic and towing speed them up.

3

Tires

Large-diameter, high-load-rated tires on 20- to 23-inch wheels cost more to replace than a typical SUV set.

4

Driving conditions

Heat, towing and short trips trigger Flexible Service earlier, adding visits over the same miles.

5

Chassis age

Air suspension and 12-volt battery wear are age-related, so they matter more as a vehicle gets older.

6

Prepay or pay per visit

A prepaid plan fixes scheduled service prices at the time of purchase.

Two costs that owners sometimes budget for don’t apply. Repairs covered by the 4-year / 50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty are free at an authorized retailer, and so are recall remedies, including the 2026 campaigns covering the mild-hybrid DC-DC converter and the driver airbag clockspring. What the wear-and-tear tier tells you about brake life

The replacement limits in Land Rover’s wear-and-tear plan are a useful signal of how quickly the larger models use brakes. On a 4-year term, the Defender, Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport allow two sets of front pads and rotors and two sets of rear pads and rotors, with front and rear wear sensors. The Discovery Sport, Evoque and Velar allow the same four-year counts but have a front wear sensor only. Our Land Rover brake service guide explains what the wear sensors do and why they are replaced with the pads.

A North Texas maintenance checklist

DFW driving is not “normal” conditions as far as a service schedule is concerned. These are the items worth raising with your advisor between scheduled visits.

  • Battery health before summer and winterHeat accelerates 12-volt battery wear, and a weak battery on a mild-hybrid model can surface as charging warnings. Ask for a battery test at spring and fall visits.
  • Tire pressure through temperature swingsA 100-degree afternoon and a 30-degree morning can be weeks apart. Check pressures against the door-jamb placard when the seasons turn, especially on Defenders that carry loads.
  • Brakes if you commute on the Tollway or US-75Heavy stop-and-go traffic wears pads faster than open-highway driving. Book an inspection when the wear warning appears rather than waiting for the next scheduled service.
  • Air suspension after hot, dry monthsIf a corner sits low after the car has been parked, or the compressor runs more than usual, have it checked early. See Land Rover air suspension maintenance.
  • Open recallsCheck your VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup once or twice a year, and mention any open campaign when you book.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to maintain a Range Rover?

It depends mainly on the engine. An i6 Range Rover on a two-year / 21,000-mile service cycle needs about half as many oil services over four years as a V8 on a one-year / 16,000-mile cycle. Brakes and tires are the largest wear costs. A Land Rover Prepaid Maintenance Plan fixes scheduled service prices at purchase.

What is the Land Rover service schedule?

Current petrol i4 and i6 models are serviced every two years or 21,000 miles, and V8 models every year or 16,000 miles, whichever comes first. The vehicle’s Flexible Service indicator can bring a service forward based on driving conditions. Brake fluid is renewed every two years.

Is Land Rover maintenance included when you buy new?

Scheduled maintenance is not part of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, which covers defects for 4 years or 50,000 miles. Maintenance can be prepaid separately through a Land Rover Prepaid Maintenance Plan in 2-, 3- or 4-year terms.

Does a Land Rover Prepaid Maintenance Plan transfer if I sell the vehicle?

Coverage stays with the vehicle until the contract’s expiration date, so remaining services go with the vehicle to the next owner. The plan is honored at participating Land Rover retailers nationwide.

Why did my Land Rover ask for service before 21,000 miles?

Flexible Service calculates the due date from how the vehicle is used. Towing, short trips, extended idling and sustained heat shorten the interval, and the time limit (two years, or one year on V8 models) applies even if the mileage is low.
