Land Rover Brake Service Guide: Pads, Rotors & Fluid

When a Range Rover, Defender or Discovery needs new brakes, what the “brake pads worn” message means, and what North Texas driving does to brake life. For owners in McKinney, Frisco, Plano and Allen.

The short answer

A Range Rover needs new brakes when the pad wear sensors trigger a warning, when an inspection finds pads or rotors below minimum thickness, or when you notice grinding, pulsing or a longer pedal. There is no fixed mileage, because pad life depends on driving. Heavy stop-and-go traffic and towing shorten it considerably. Brake fluid is different: Land Rover renews it every two years regardless of mileage. Pads, calipers and rotors are inspected at every scheduled service. Near McKinney, Land Rover Frisco’s service department can be booked online for a brake inspection.

Signs your Land Rover needs brake service

What you see

Messages and lamps

  • A brake pad wear warning in the instrument cluster
  • A red brake warning, which can indicate low fluid. Treat it as urgent.
  • A parking brake fault message

What you hear

Sounds

  • Grinding or scraping when braking, which points to metal-on-metal contact
  • Persistent squeal that does not clear after the first few stops
  • Clicking or knocking from a wheel under braking

What you feel

Pedal and steering

  • Pulsing through the pedal or steering wheel, often uneven rotor wear
  • A softer or longer pedal than usual
  • The vehicle pulling to one side under braking

What the brake pad wear warning actually means

Land Rover brake pads carry electronic wear sensors. When the pad material wears down to the sensor, the circuit is broken and the instrument cluster displays a warning. The message is an early notice, not an emergency. There is still usable pad left when it appears, but it is time to book an inspection rather than wait for the next scheduled service.

Because the sensor is worn through to trigger the warning, it is replaced along with the pads. A pad replacement that reuses the old sensor will leave the warning on. Land Rover’s own wear-and-tear maintenance plan lists sensors as a wear item alongside pads and rotors, and it shows which models carry sensors on which axle.

Models Wear sensors Max. pad and rotor sets covered, 4-year wear-and-tear plan*
Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport Front and rear Up to 2 front and 2 rear
Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar Front Up to 2 front and 2 rear

*Maximum replacements covered on a 4-year term of Land Rover Prepaid Full Maintenance Plus Wear & Tear (Jaguar Land Rover North America). The larger models are allowed two front sets even on a 3-year term, a sign of how quickly heavy vehicles use front brakes. Actual life depends on driving.

What happens at a Land Rover brake service

A genuine sequence, in the order the work is done.

Step 1

Inspect and measure

Pad thickness, rotor thickness and run-out, caliper condition, hoses and fluid condition are checked at each wheel.

Step 2

Release the parking brake electronically

The rear electronic parking brake is put into service mode with a diagnostic tool before any rear work begins.

Step 3

Replace worn parts

New pads and wear sensors are fitted, with rotors replaced if they are below the minimum thickness or damaged.

Step 4

Recalibrate and road test

The parking brake is taken out of service mode and recalibrated, then the brakes are bedded in and road tested.

Why the electronic parking brake changes a rear brake job The rear calipers on current Land Rovers contain an electric motor that applies the parking brake. Forcing the piston back by hand, as on an older vehicle, can damage the motor’s gearing. The parking brake has to be wound back electronically first, which is why rear pad replacement needs a diagnostic tool that supports your model.

Pads only, or pads and rotors?

This is the question most brake quotes turn on. The answer comes from measurement, not habit.

What the technician finds Usual outcome
Rotor above its minimum thickness, smooth, even surface Pads and wear sensors only
Rotor at or below the minimum thickness stamped on the rotor Pads, sensors and rotors
Deep scoring, cracks or heat spots on the rotor face Replace the rotors
Pulsing felt through the pedal, with measurable thickness variation Replace the rotors. Resurfacing is limited by the thickness remaining.
Pads worn unevenly across one axle Check the caliper slides and pistons before fitting new pads

Brakes are always serviced in axle pairs, both fronts or both rears, so the vehicle stops evenly. On heavier Land Rovers the fronts do most of the work and usually wear first. It is normal for a front brake service to come due while the rears still have life left.

If you are comparing quotes, ask what pads are being fitted. Genuine Land Rover pads are matched to the vehicle’s wear sensors, braking feel and noise characteristics. Some aftermarket pads trade those for lower dust or a lower price. Either way, the new wear sensors should be included, or the warning will remain.

Brake fluid: the item mileage doesn’t decide

Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the air over time, even in a sealed system. As its water content rises, its boiling point falls. Under hard braking, as on a long downhill with a trailer or in repeated stops from highway speed, low-boiling-point fluid can vaporize and produce a soft pedal. That is why Land Rover renews brake fluid every two years whatever the odometer says. A Range Rover that has covered only 8,000 miles in two years needs the same fluid renewal as one that has covered 30,000.

Brake fluid renewal is part of Land Rover’s scheduled maintenance and is included in every tier of its prepaid plans. How it fits alongside oil, filters and inspections is covered in the Land Rover maintenance schedule and cost guide.

What DFW driving does to Land Rover brakes

Stop-and-go commuting

US-75 between McKinney and Plano, the Dallas North Tollway and SH-121 at rush hour mean many more stops per mile than open-highway driving. Pad wear tracks stops more closely than miles.

Vehicle weight

A Range Rover or Defender 130 weighs roughly two and a half tons or more before passengers and cargo. More mass means more energy to turn into heat at every stop.

Towing

A boat or camper behind a Defender or Range Rover adds weight the brakes have to control, even with trailer brakes. Inspect brakes before towing season, not after.

Heat and hybrids

Summer heat does not help brakes cool. Plug-in hybrids recover energy through regenerative braking, which can extend pad life, but light use of the friction brakes can leave rotors prone to surface corrosion. Regular firm stops keep them clean.

Frequently asked questions

When does a Range Rover need new brakes?

When the pad wear sensors trigger a warning, when an inspection finds pads or rotors below minimum thickness, or when you notice grinding, pulsing or a longer pedal. There is no fixed mileage, because stop-and-go driving, vehicle load and towing all change how fast pads wear.

What does the brake pad wear warning mean on a Land Rover?

It means the pads have worn down to their electronic wear sensors. Some usable pad remains, so it is not an emergency, but you should book an inspection soon. The sensors are replaced along with the pads.

How often should Land Rover brake fluid be changed?

Every two years, regardless of mileage. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can cause a soft pedal under heavy braking.

Why do Land Rover rear brakes need a diagnostic tool?

The rear calipers contain the electronic parking brake motor. It must be put into service mode electronically before the pads are replaced. Forcing the piston back by hand can damage the motor.
